Scripture:
Matthew 6:14 – “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” (NIV)
Devotion:
“I forgive you.” These three simple words are seemingly difficult for many to say. The Bible is clear about forgiveness. If we forgive others, God will forgive us. If we don’t forgive others, God won’t forgive us. There are other consequences too for unforgiveness. When you don’t forgive, it affects your body, mind, and spirit. Your body is affected by the stress related to holding on to the remembrance of what caused you to need to ask for forgiveness. You may often find yourself reviewing the scenario over and over; your mind is not completely at rest. Your spirit is weary because you are not being obedient to God.
When there is someone from whom you need forgiveness, pray about it, and contact them to ask for forgiveness. If you cannot contact them, pray to God and ask Him to forgive you. Asking for forgiveness requires humility, since humility often requires admitting you are wrong. Requesting forgiveness can also make you vulnerable to the person to whom you are asking forgiveness because he or she may not receive your request favorably. He or She may berate you for the transgression that prompted you to seek forgiveness in the first place and not offer forgiveness. This is why it is important to pray first and embody a spirit of sincerity. If you follow God’s instructions, the outcome is likely to be favorable. If, however, you do not receive the forgiveness you seek, rest assured that God is your witness, and He forgives you.
Prayer:
Dear God, we know how difficult it is to seek and offer forgiveness. We also know, however, that forgiveness is required of us. Please help us to forgive others as you forgive us for our many transgressions. In Jesus’ name we pray and give thanks. Amen.
